Just forget it ever happened, he was drunk half the time, so maybe he will have forgotten too.
The dull grey button to transformed in to a bright yellow one, and the doors opened slowly, to purposely annoy me I concluded. As soon as the crack was big enough, I squeezed into the elevator. In such a hurry I didn’t check if he was there. I mumbled a salutation to the general audience and shuffled over to my usual corner.
“Hi Meredith!”
No! It couldn’t be, not here! Not now! I wanted to run or hide, but I was trapped, the doors had closed and we were heading up.
“Hi Brad,” I mumbled staring at the doors.
“So Mere, I was wondering, we had such a great time last night, maybe you would wanted to grab a drink tonight.”
A few people drifted off, they left the elevator without a look back, but I was frozen by the question. I looked around and my gaze fell on my dropped bag, the usually organized papers had been shuffled.
“Umm... I don’t know, I think I have some paper work that needs to be done.”
“Nonsense, a few pages of paper work won’t stop me from having a drink with my girl.” Brad slung his arm around me and I shuddered. He took no notice. I heard that comforting beep of the elevator and tried to duck out of his grip to follow the lucky souls that had escaped this ornately decorated dungeon, but this time I was trapped by firm grip. I thought I might as well get it over with.
“Brad, please do not put your arm around me. Thanks, but no thanks. I turned around and
noticed we were the only ones in the elevator. I sighed with relief that no one had witnessed that, I faced the elevator doors, and I noticed that the usually bright buttons were dark and I pressed 12. Still nothing.
There was a small bump, then a bigger jolt. I got tossed to the side and landed on Brad. And everything was still.
Once the jolting stopped I rolled out of the insanely awkward position and stood up, well at least I tried. The elevator was tilted at an odd angle, I looked over at Brad, and even in this situation he was checking his hair. Just like him. He put his own personal mirror down and met my eyes and I looked around, I couldn’t face even Brad after my sudden outburst.
"What happened?" He asked, as he tried to find my gaze. His voice was so scared I met his stare and tried to unravel the confusing soul hidden in the bright blue eyes. No, not again, I couldn't make the same mistake twice.
Brad stared at me waiting for an answer, and as the creak of the elevator interrupted the awkward silence, I was snapped back to reality.
"I'm not sure, but by the looks of the angle of the elevator, one of the cables in the shaft must of broken." I leveled my voice, I was making an effort to stay calm.
Brad tried to stand up, but he crashed into the mirror and fell back down, head landing on my lap. I froze, I looked down, he mouthed an oops, and laughed. I pushed his head off my lap and frowned. I felt foolish, but I did not want to give him the wrong idea. He was still Brad, egotistical and all.
“Dam it Brad, what have you done!” I had lost my temper, “if you had let me out on my floor, then maybe I would have been working, not stuck in this broken elevator with you!”
“I’m sorry, well not really, cuz now I get to spend time with my girl” He scooted closer to me. Apparently I wasn’t the only one blocking my outburst out.
“You disgust me.” He leaned in for a kiss and I dodged it. “Why me, WHY ME!” I crawled into the opposite corner, I needed to get my calm and get away from Brad so I closed my eyes.
“Hellooo, anybody there?” Brad knocked on my head. I sighed and just gave up, in the 8 seconds of quiet I had concluded that I would be in this elevator for a long time and I needed to do something.
“Brad, I don’t like you, last night was a mistake and if I could take it back I would. I’m not your ‘girl’ and I never will be. “
“Oh.” For once in his life Brad was not haughty, he was confused if not scared. I was immediately sorry, the elevator was now more awkward than ever. He edged to the other corner and stared in to space. I actually felt… bad.
I truly tried to start a conversation, but Brad was quiet. Surprisingly, I missed the old Brad. We sat in silence as we waited. When the elevator shook all of the sudden I was scared out of my wits. However when I heard a human voice from outside the elevator, I was relieved.
Help was here. However they were only going to solve the smaller of the two issues…
